The race for the Big East baseball championship will come down to the final weekend of the regular season.
Louisville (35-17, 16-8), fresh off a series win over St. John's, enters the final weekend of the regular season tied with USF for second place in the Big East standings one game behind the Red Storm (32-19, 17-7). UofL is the only Big East team this season to win a series against St. John's.
"We’ve given ourselves a shot going into the last weekend in the conference race," said sophomore Cole Sturgeon. "We know we have a lot to play for this weekend.”
The Cardinals close out the season with a three-game series at Pittsburgh this weekend. St. John's finishes with three games at home against fourth-place Seton Hall. Clearly, Dan McDonnell's squad will need some help from the Pirates, the lone Big East team to win a series against Louisville, to win the regular-season title.
“I told the team that in four of the last six seasons we’ve had a chance to win the Big East regular season title going into the last weekend," McDonnell said. "We seem to always be a game or two out of first in that final weekend, which isn’t ideal because we’d certainly prefer to be one or two games in front.
"But I’ve told the guys that in life, we don’t remember the things that come easy. We remember the things that came with challenges. Our backs are against the wall a little in the conference race, but it’s still a fun spot to be in. The challenge and the message for our guys is that it’s time to have a great week.”
Louisville will play its regular season finale at home when it hosts Morehead State at 6 p.m., ET on Tuesday. Seniors Stewart Ijames, Self and Travis Tingle, and fourth-year junior Justin Amlung will be honored prior to the game.
