The University of Louisville basketball staff is searching for a point guard in the Class of 2013, likely trying to get three targets to make official visits.
And the first of those point guards to visit looks like it will be Hampton, Va., standout Anthony Barber, who is ranked No. 9 in the Scout.com top 100.
Barber told Cardinal Authority that he has three of four visits set up and confirmed his visit to the Louisville campus will be Sept. 7-9. He will head to North Carolina State on Sept. 1 and Alabama on Sept. 18. He's also considering Kansas.
"When I make the visits, I think I will then know what school I want to go to," said the 6-foot-2 Barber, who is nicknamed "Cat" and has been to Alabama and N.C. State on unofficial visits. "I will sit down with my family and coaches after the visits and make sure.
"But I think I will probably know right away."
U of L is also recruiting junior college point guard Chris Jones and Mishawaka, Ind., point guard Demetrius Jackson. Neither has a firm date set up for a visit to the Louisville campus at this point.
Barber had a sensational spring and summer and saw his name rise in the rankings. He also saw his college recruitment take off.
But Barber said his recruitment came with a twist.
"Something got out that I was going to Virginia Tech," Barber said. "So, the Virginia Tech thing really messed schools up. But when word got out that I really wasn't committed, (U of L) coach (Kevin) Keatts was one of the first to call me.
"Louisville is a really good school, I like coach Keatts a lot and he has a good relationship with my high school coach. He's a good guy. Coach (Rick) Pitino is one of the best coaches in the country and they need a point guard to come in and play right away next year, so that is a big deal."
Barber said there "is still a chance," that he and AAU teammate and close friend Troy Williams would pick the same school. U of L, Alabama and Kansas are recruiting them both with the Jayhawks a recent entry in the Williams recruitment.
"We've still been talking about it," Barber said. Williams has already been on an unofficial to U of L but currently doesn't have an official set up.
Barber said he "doesn't pay attention to rankings," but was pleased with how he performed this summer. He did have his summer cut a few days short because of a wrist injury that he suffered in a game.
"I have had people tell me I am the No 3 point guard, but it doesn't matter to me," he said. "That just means I have more work to do.
"I just know I have more work to do. The opportunity is there for me right now. I have to try and make the most of it."
Cardinal Authority will keep you posted on any updates.
