Louisville lands a point guard

The University of Louisville basketball team has landed a third commitment in the Class of 2013.

Junior college point guard Chris Jones made an official visit to Louisville over the weekend and on Monday he made his commitment official.

The 5-foot-10 Jones called University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino and gave him a verbal commitment.

Jones is the third member of the Class of 2013 for the Cardinals, joining Hargrave Academy guards Terry Rozier and Anton Gill.

A guard at Northwest Florida State College, Jones is considered one of the top junior-college players in the country. He was a top-50 prospects out of high school and had signed with Tennessee before ending up at the JUCO.

"I've coached 24 years and is one of the top two or three players I have ever coached," Northwest Florida coach Steve Forbes said, who also was an assistant at Tennessee when the Vols signed Jones. "He's really good."

Jones had visited Oklahoma State and Baylor and was also considering Kansas and Florida State. He told Cardinal Authority on Sunday night that he was going to call Pitino on Monday because "it just felt right there."

Forbes said Jones committing to Louisville was a "great fit."

"Need is number one, they are losing Peyton Siva and the opportunity to play is important for a kid at the junior-college level," he said. "The second thing for him is the opportunity to win a national championship.

"He won a high school state championship and played for a national championship last year and hopefully this year. Not a lot of junior-college kids get that opportunity but he will get that at Louisville. And the third thing is playing for a Hall of Fame coach. It's a great opportunity for Chris."

Jones averaged 18 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists a game last season at NW Florida State College and helped the team to a National Junior College Athletic Association runner-up finish as a freshman.
