It's just a few weeks away from one of the biggest official visits ever for the University of Louisville women's basketball program.
Jeff Walz and his staff will host Mercedes Russell and Emmonie Henderson on the weekend of Oct. 26.
Henderson is considered one of the top unsigned prospects in the country and would be a huge catch for the Cardinals, but Russell is the prized recruit.
The 6-foot-5 All-American is ranked as the No. 1 player in the country and will visit Tennessee the week before she heads to Louisville. Russell will then make her decision between the two schools and sign in November.
Walz and his staff have spent a lot of time on Russell. He was in Oregon visiting her earlier this week with two assistant coaches.
The Cardinals are trying to pull off a major coup. Russell is a two-time Class 5-A state player of the year and averaged 26 points, 15 rebounds, 5.8 blocked shots and 4.7 assists a game as a junior.
She has helped Springfield win a pair of state titles.
Springfield coach Bill Wagner recently told the Register-Guard newspaper that, "I think she wants to see everything on campus one more time before she knows for sure" as to what school she will sign with.
The end of the fall signing period is Nov. 14.
