University of Louisville women's basketball coach Jeff Walz and his staff are actively recruiting about a half-dozen prospects in the Class of 2013.
On Saturday, the Cardinals landed their first commitment.
Janelle Cannon, one of the top junior college players in the country, made her official visit to U of L and gave Walz a commitment before she left campus. She confirmed the news via a text message and on her twitter account.
The 5-foot-9 Cannon is a point guard from Belleville, Ill., Southwestern Illinois College and picked the Cardinals over Washington, DePaul and several others.
A native of Wheeling, Ill., Cannon was a three-year all-conference and all-area selection in high school. She averaged 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals as a junior and then 19 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals as a senior. She was second-team All-State in Illinois as a senior.
Cannon originally signed with Minnesota out of high school and was enrolled there for summer classes but left and spent time at Illinois State before she enrolled at SW Illinois and played last season.
A JUCO All-American, Cannon averaged 18.6 points, 6.5 assists, 5.7 rebounds and 4.5 steals per game as a freshman at SW Illinois.
Cannon will sign next month with the Cardinals. U of L will have a huge recruiting weekend coming up with official visits from No. 1 ranked player nationally Mercedes Russell along with Emmonie Henderson and others.
