Rutgers Accepts Bid to Russell Athletic Bowl

Rutgers accepted a bid today to play in the 2012 Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando, Fla. The Scarlet Knights (9-3, 5-2) are expected to face Virginia Tech of the ACC.

The 2012 Rutgers football team, the first to earn a share of the Big East title in program history, formally accepted a bid this afternoon to play in the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando, Fla. The bowl, played at the Citrus Bowl, kicks off Dec. 28 where Rutgers is expected to face Virginia Tech.

"After winning a share of the Big East championship for the first time in school history, it is great reward for our football family to play in the Russell Athletic Bowl in beautiful Orlando," said Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood in a statement. "We are excited to continue our season against an ACC opponent in one of the best destinations to be in during bowl season."

The Scarlet Knights will have a Sunday night press conference to discuss the bowl game, which is the seventh in eight seasons.

Rutgers is expected to face Virginia Tech (6-6, 4-4), but there has been no formal announcement by the Hokies or Russell Athletic Bowl committee yet.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to compete in the Russell Athletic Bowl and we thank the great people at Florida Citrus Sports for the invitation," said athletic director Tim Pernetti in a statement. "Orlando is an easily accessible, phenomenal bowl destination which will offer our fans, student-athletes, staff and guests a host of activities, events, and top-notch hospitality."

Rutgers brings an impressive five-game winning streak in bowl games, most recently in a defeat of Iowa State at the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. The Scarlet Knights have not lost a bowl game since 2005 and have gone bowling six out of the last seven years.
