Orange Take First Game of Gotham Classic

The battle of in-state teams, Syracuse and Canisius, resulted in a 20-plus-point victory for the Orange as Syracuse remains unbeaten.

The first match-up for the Syracuse Orange men's basketball team in the Gotham Classic began as anything but an easy outing. The Canisius Golden Griffins were the first to score and would later regain the lead deep into the first half.

At the break, the Orange had a one-possession lead, up by a mere three points.

With just about four minutes into the second half, Syracuse had turned that three-point separation into a 12-point advantage.

The Orange attacked the rim and were more successful in the latter half, elevating for dunks and connecting on other high-percentage tries.

Syracuse performed well beyond their first half outing in the second half, expanding their advantage to an 85-61 victory over Canisius.

Senior forward James Southerland led all Syracuse scorers with 21 points, while sophomore guard Michael Carter-Williams continued his streak of at least nine assists per game in the last eight games with 14 in this match.
