Failing to score in the final three-plus minutes of regulation just as they did to begin the game down 10 points, Syracuse allowed the three-point shooters of Villanova to propel Saturday morning's game into overtime.
From there, the trend of the Orange missing free throws and the Wildcats sinking threes led to Villanova's second top-five win of the week, sinking Syracuse 75-71. 'Nova beat top-ranked Louisville on Wednesday, also at home.
The Wildcats were led by Darrun Hilliard's 25 points, while the Orange was paced by Brandon Triche's 24.
Free throws plagued Syracuse all afternoon, but especially at the end of regulation and in the extra session. The Orange shot just 35.6 percent from the floor in the process.
Jerami Grant and Baye Keita weren't available for overtime after fouling out and SU swingman James Southerland remains sidelined because of an academic issue.
Syracuse stands 18-2 on the season and 6-1 in Big East play. It's next contest is at Pittsburgh on February 2.
