Elam 'so glad' he stayed committed to U of L

Orange Park, Fla., Fleming Island High School defensive standout Donel Elam made a verbal commitment to the University of Louisville last February. Elam had other schools after him throughout the process. He made an official visit to Louisville this weekend and Cardinal Authority has an update.

Donel Elam is glad he stayed committed.

The defensive standout from Orange Park, Fla., Fleming Island High School committed to the University of Louisville after Junior Day last February.

But the 6-foot-1, 200-pound Elam still had interest from Iowa State, Pittsburgh, West Virginia and several other schools throughout his senior season.

"I don't know if I would say it was hard, but I'm glad I stayed committed," Elam said on Sunday. "I just felt like I wanted to stay committed."

Elam made his official visit to U of L this weekend and told Cardinal Authority he's "100 percent" going to sign on Wednesday.

"I had so much fun," he said. "It's where I want to be and I am glad I stuck with it. I never really thought I would be anywhere else."

Elam was hosted by tight end Gerald Christian on his visit and said he had many of the things reaffirmed from when he was here for Junior Day.

"I just like everything about it," Elam said. "I like the coaches and love the town and the atmosphere. I can't wait to get there."

Elam said the U of L coaches told him he could come in and "battle right away" for playing time He'll likely be a safety in college.
