The University of Louisville women’s basketball team landed its first verbal commitment in the Class of 2014 on Saturday. Harveysburg, Ohio, Clinton-Massie junior forward Sydney Brackemyre committed to the Cardinals. Cardinal Authority has the story and why she pulled the trigger.

Harveysburg, Ohio, Clinton-Massie High School junior forward Sydney Brackemyre gave several reasons for committing to the University of Louisville.

Brackemyre pulled the trigger on her commitment Saturday afternoon because she loves the style of the play the Cardinals employ and has built a good relationship with the U of L coaching staff.

But she said one of the main reasons was “my faith.”

”I love the staff, I love the style they play and they have a strong FCA program,” Brackemyre said of U of L’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes program. “I went on a visit and watched practice, stayed over and the next day spent time with the team and that night went to FCA. It was great.

”My faith is really important to me.”

The 6-foot Brackemyre picked the Cardinals over Michigan and Dayton. She had been ranked as the No. 30 prospect in the country prior to this past season and is considered one of the top prospects in the state of Ohio.

Brackemyre has dozens of other looks but said U of L was “the perfect all-around fit for me. They had everything I wanted.”

”The way they run and the way the coaches do so well drawing on mismatches,” she said. “That’s what I am really looking forward too.”

Brackemyre is currently sidelined with a torn ACL. She suffered the injury on Dec. 29 and had surgery on Jan. 8, noting she “is ahead of schedule” in rehab.

”It’s going great,” she said. “I’m not going to rush it. But (the doctors) said I could be back playing in July. (The injury) is going to help me become a smarter player. I played half of this season and I’m watching the second half from the bench.

”That’s helping me become smarter.”

As a sophomore, Brackemyre was a Division II honorable mention All-State selection when she averaged 17.7 points and 9.1 rebounds.
