The University of Louisville women’s basketball team scored a 72-62 victory, hitting 8 of 14 three-pointers, on Senior Night.
With seniors Monique Reid and Shelby Harper in the starting lineup, the Cardinals never trailed after Reid scored the first five points to erase an early 4-0 deficit. The Cardinals led by as much as 14.
”It’s great to get a win,” U of L coach Jeff Walz said. “We really shot the ball well. It was one of those when you let someone make some shots to start the game, then all of a sudden they get some confidence going.
”We could just never really get a big lead and put them away. But hey, it’s a win and I am going to take it. I won’t give it back.”
The victory puts the Cardinals (23-6, 11-4) a half game ahead of Syracuse and St. John’s for third-place in the Big East Conference. U of L will play at Syracuse on Monday at 9 p.m. in the regular-season finale.
Junior Antonia Slaughter led the Cardinals with 17 points and six rebounds, while Shoni Schimmel chipped in 15 points and six assists.
The Cardinals hit 20 of 40 from the field, including 8 of 14 three-pointers and went 24 of 30 from the free-throw line. U of L had 16 assists on 20 baskets.
Reid, a fifth-year senior from Fern Creek High School, finished with eight points, one rebound and one assist. She hit a three-pointer early in the game, which marked just her eighth career three-pointer in 132 career games.
Harper played 10 minutes and had one assists and one steal.
