The NCAA second round match-up between 5th-seeded Louisville and 4th-seeded Purdue was expected to be a tight contest, but the Cardinals refused to let that happen. Louisville never trailed and maintained a double-digit lead throughout, defeating Purdue 76-63 in front of 9,236 at the KFC Yum! Center.
Sara Hammond led the Cardinals with a double-double, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Antonita Slaughter contributed 16 points and 7 rebounds, while Shoni Schimmel added 14 points. Jude Schimmel had a stellar performance at both ends of the court, recording 8 steals, 7 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds.
Head coach Jeff Walz pressure defense continued to fuel the Cardinals play. Louisville swiped 14 steals, forced 22 Purdue turnovers and scored 33 points off the turnovers. The Boilermakers shot 42% from the field and connected on just 25% of its three-point attempts.
Louisville shot 47% from the field and 41% beyond the three-point arc. The Cardinals outrebounded the Boilmakers by 6 and won the battle in the paint by 4.
Louisville advances to the Sweet 16 in Oklahoma City Region against No. 1 seed Baylor.
