The University of Louisville baseball team has the longest winning streak in the country at 16 games and is ranked in the top 10. Here are a few notes as the Cardinals prepare for the Big East Tournament, which begins on Wednesday morning, in Clearwater, Fla.

CARDS SWEEP BIG EAST HONORS

The University of Louisville baseball team won the Big East title with a sweep of Pittsburgh last weekend. On Monday, the Cardinals swept the Big East awards.

Junior designated hitter Jeff Gardner was named Big East Player of the Week after a monster week at the plate, while sophomore closer Nick Burdi was honored as the leagues Pitcher of the Week.

It was the first time U of L has swept the weekly honors ever.

Gardner, a product of Whitefield Academy, hit .333 with three home runs, a triple and seven RBIs during four games last week. He hit two home runs in Thursday’s win over Pittsburgh, added another on Friday and then a two-run triple that keyed a win over the Panthers on Saturday.

”I feel like I am playing the best I have played since I have been here,” said Gardner, who is currently second on the team with a .341 batting average and leads the Cardinals with nine home runs on the season.

Burdi, who has a league-best 14 saves on the season, pitched 3.2 innings of relief last week and had seven strikeouts. He finished with three saves in four games.

CARDS TOP SEED IN BIG EAST

With the league title in hand, U of L will be the top seed in the Big East Tournament that begins on Wednesday in Clearwater, Fla.

U of L (46-10) will open play in the tournament on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and face No. 8 seed Connecticut. No. 4 South Florida and No. 5 Rutgers are also in the bracket with the Cardinals and Huskies.

The eight-team tournament is double elimination among the four-team pods and then a single championship game between the two survivors on Sunday at noon. The final will be televised on ESPNU.

All of the U of L games can be seen on ESPN3.

HOME SWEET HOME

The newly renovated Jim Patterson Stadium was the friendly confines for the U of L baseball team this season.

The Cardinals played 36 homes games and finished 31-5 at home.

U of L lost a pair of games to Rutgers and dropped one to Kent State, Kentucky and Vanderbilt in home games.

The Cardinals won eight homes games to end the season. U of L is likely to host an NCAA Regional in two weeks.

The NCAA Draw will be held next Monday at noon.

CARDS RISE IN RANKINGS

The hot ending to the season has U of L back in the top 10 of most of the baseball polls, many checking in at No. 10.

U of L has also moved up to No. 13 in the RPI rankings.

The Cardinals are playing for one of eight national seeds in the NCAA Tournament, which would then allow them to host the regional – and the super regional (should they advance).

PerfectGame.org has U of L listed as the No. 8 seed currently.

WINNING STREAK NUMBERS

U of L’s 16-game winning streak is now the second longest in school history.

The Cardinals all-time best is 20 games back in the 1956 season.

U of L’s record for wins in a season is 50 in the 2010 season.
