The University of Louisville baseball staff has been rolling on the recruiting trail in recent weeks, landing several verbal commitments. Two of the commitments are top pitching prospects in the Class of 2014. Cardinal Authority has the details.

University of Louisville baseball coach Dan McDonnell and his staff have been on the recruiting trail since ending the season at the College World Series.

And the Cardinals have been very successful.

Among the recent commitments the Louisville staff have recently picked up are top pitching prospects Sean Leland and Brendan McKay.

The 6-foot-5, 200-pound Leland is a right-handed pitcher from Orland Park, Ill., Sandburg High School who is considered one of the top prospects in the state of Illinois in the Class of 2014.

”It was a pretty easy decision for me after seeing (pitching) coach (Roger) Williams and his reputation,” Leland said. “He’s a great guy to play for and really gets his guys to the next level.

”I’m excited about playing for coach Williams and coach McDonnell.”

Leland was one of the top players at the Prep Baseball Report Top Prospect Showcase in June, hitting 89 miles per hour with his fastball. He also plays quarterback on the football team at Sandburg,

McKay is a 6-1, 200-pound left-handed pitcher from Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk High School and is projected as a high-draft pick in next June’s MLB Draft.

He picked U of L over West Virginia and Wake Forest.

As a junior, McKay was the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Player of the Year. He was a combined 16-0 with 228 strikeouts and just five earned runs during his high school and American Legion season.

McKay had one American Legion game where he allowed just one hit and struck out 20 of the 22 batters he faced.
