Among the signees for the University of Louisville baseball team on Wednesday will be St. Xavier High School standout Austin Clemons. Cardinal Authority takes a closer look.

The University of Louisville baseball program will sign perhaps its best class in history with some top-notch signees expected to ink with the Cardinals.

Among them will be in-state standout Austin Clemons.

Clemons, a 6-foot-2, 195-pounder, is a senior at St. Xavier High School, who has spent time at several positions in his career with the Tigers, including third base, catcher, and shortstop.

And Clemons has made quite the impression on scouts, earning a spot on the state’s list of top five recruits, as well as being named the nation’s No. 32 third base prospect.

Despite growing up in Louisville, playing for the Cardinals was not something that Clemons had always dreamed of. Auburn, South Florida, and Tennessee were among those in line for a shot at Clemons’ services, but as he puts it, the U of L program’s recent success was too much to pass up.

“I didn’t know a lot about the (Louisville) baseball program until I came and visited,” Clemons admits. “But (the visit) really opened my eyes and I’m really glad I get to be a part of it.

“There are a lot of opportunities in Louisville’s baseball program. The whole school is on the rise and doing great things. It’s really become a winning tradition, and I want to be a part of that.”

Clemons, who aside his baseball success has managed to put together a 3.85 GPA at St. X, believes that he can help make a difference for the Cardinals immediately.

“I’m going to come in and work hard, and no matter if I’m on the field or off the field I can always be a good teammate. I’m also a good hitter and I can play a lot of different positions.”

But before becoming a Cardinal, Clemons has one more season of high school baseball to attend to, which the prospect is not overlooking.

“With St. X, I’m really excited and it’s my last chance to go after a state championship,” Clemons said. “That’s really what I’m keeping my eyes on. It’s not about personal goals I’m trying to reach as much as trying to make my team be the best team it can be.”
