Whiting takes over the leadoff spot for Cards

Junior shortstop Sutton Whiting will be the leadoff hitter for the University of Louisville baseball team this season. U of L coach Dan McDonnell is expecting big things from Whiting.

Following in his brothers' footsteps, University of Louisville junior shortstop Sutton Whiting has a big role for the Cardinals this season.

Whiting, who batted .308 last season, will take over the leadoff spot from the Cardinals. Adam Engel batted leadoff in all 65 games last season and then turned pro.

A native of New Wilmington, Pa., Whiting's brother - Boomer - was a leadoff and All-American for the Cardinals several years ago.

"He had a great fall and has been solid in preseason," U of L coach Dan McDonnell said. "Of course, his brother was a leadoff All-American for us. It's been fun to watch Sutton grow as a player. There's something to be said about real experience and he has it.

"In college when you have a junior leading off, with all of the at-bats he's had, it's amazing watching him now as opposed to when he was a freshman. He'll battle and grind and know when to take pitches and he swings it. He's doing well and will be good there for us."

The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Whiting said he's "excited" about being able to step in.

Whiting started 63 of the 64 games he played last season at shortstop and batted ninth in the order 63 times for the Cardinals. He was a second-team All-Big East pick last season and had 30 RBIs, 41 runs scored and 24 stolen bases.

"We're ready to get going," Whiting said. "We have some guys moving around from last year, but we're ready and it will be exciting."
