U of L baseball: Weekly notebook

The University of Louisville baseball notebook runs each Monday, covering all the ins and outs of the Cardinals' baseball team. The Cardinals are 33-11 heading into a four-game week, including a Wednesday home game against Ohio State.

ROSENBAUM WITH A HUGE WEEK

University of Louisville sophomore first baseman Danny Rosenbaum only had four starts in the previous 12 games before last week.

But he picked up four starts and made the most of it.

In his four starts at the designated hitter spot, Rosenbaum hit .778 with a home run, two doubles, five RBIs, four runs scored and a 1.333 slugging percentage.

Rosenbaum, who had a two-run homer in Sunday's 8-3 win over Connecticut, was named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

On the season, Rosenbaum is now hitting .326 with 21 RBIs in 25 starts.

"We've been seeing a lot of left-handed pitchers, so Danny hitting would be big for us," U of L coach Dan McDonnell said. "Guys like to throw lefties at us."

Corey Ray BREAKS THROUGH

Freshman Corey Ray of Chicago said he felt like he was "close" in some of his at-bats in recent weeks for the Cardinals.

And finally, Ray came through for his team.

Ray had a two-run home run against Morehead State and starting on Saturday against UConn, he went 2-for-4 with a triple, run scored and an RBI.

"I'm trying to get better," Ray said. "Coach has been fussing at me to stay short, stay short. I'm just trying to get better."

Ray did have a tough time overcoming his "trip" against Morehead State. As he rounded first, Ray fell flat on his face just before second base.

"My teammates told me I was tripping," he said with a smile. "I was thinking three out of the box and when I tried to slow down, my feet kept going."

Ray has five hits in 23 at-bats this season with a double, triple, home run and nine RBIs, while scoring four runs.

FILOMENO BACK MAKING PITCHES

Junior pitcher Joe Filomeno started the season in the weekend rotation but said before last week his pitching had been "crap" this season.

But Filomeno seems to have found his form again.

The hard-throwing Filomeno pitched 1 2/3 innings against Morehead State, allowing nothing. He struck out two batters.

He then pitched an inning, walking two, on Sunday against UConn.

"It felt good to get back out there," Filomeno said. "It's nice that the coaches trust me and they still believe in me. As a pitcher, you are not going to have it every day. I didn't have it a few days, but they believe in me still."

Filomeno has pitched 20 1/3 innings and allowed 24 hits and 16 earned runs, while striking out 18 batters and walking 19.

ANOTHER BIG WEEK ON TAP

The Cardinals take a six-game winning streak into a four-game week, including Wednesday's 6 p.m. first pitch against Ohio State.

The game against the Buckeyes is at Jim Patterson Stadium and admission is free. The Cardinals are 25-6 at home this season.

U of L then plays at South Florida (24-19, 10-8 AAC) this weekend. The Friday game is slated for 7 p.m., while the Saturday game is at 6 and Sunday at noon.

The Cardinals are 11-4 in league play, while Central Florida leads the league at 15-3 and has a 2-1 series advantage over U of L.
