Walz in the mix for several Texas stars

CHICAGO - University of Louisville women's basketball coach Jeff Walz is recruiting prospects from all over the country, including a couple of major stars from Texas. Cardinal Authority takes a look at two Texas prospects considering the Cardinals.

One of the top targets for University of Louisville women's basketball coach Jeff Walz in the Class of 2015 is Waco, Texas, center Erin DeGrate. But she's not the only prospect Walz and his staff are recruiting from Texas.

Walz spent time in Chicago last weekend watching DFW Elite, an AAU team loaded with prospects from the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

The two targets on the team for U of L are 6-foot-7 2015 center Teaira McCowan and 2016 guard Calveion Landrum, a teammate of DeGrate.

DFW Elite, which is coached by former Baylor assistant Damion McKinney, has multiple Division I prospects on the roster. McKinney, who recruited and coached Brittney Griner, said the Cardinals are one of a number of schools in on both of the DFW prospects.

McCowan is a big, physical post player with better mobility than you normally see with a girl her size. McKinney said she is "really dominant" when she's playing in the right style.

"I had Brittney and there's a lot of things that (McCowan) does like that at her age," he said. "She's a good one."

McKinney would give a list for McCowan but said pretty much every "major school" in the country has been in contact about her. The Cardinals have been in the mix for a while and Walz watched her several times last weekend.

Texas A&M and Baylor have been mentioned as favorites but McKinney said, "you never know."

The 6-foot Landrum is ranked as the No. 11 player in the Class of 2016 by ESPN.com and said she was "very interested" in checking out the Cardinals. She plays on the same AAU team with McCowan and was also in Chicago.

"She has the chance to be really good," McKinney said. "She has a lot of skill."

McCowan will play for Walz on the USA Basketball U-18 National team later this month in Colorado Springs, Colo.
