Cards get commit out of Mississippi

Jaylen Smith

Pascagoula, Miss., wide receiver Jaylen Smith saw his stock rise during the spring with a bunch of schools extending offers. On Thursday night, Smith ended the process with a commitment to the University of Louisville football program. It was the second commitment of the night for U of L.

The University of Louisville's recruiting success kept rolling on Thursday night.

The Cardinals picked up a commitment from Lilburn, Ga., defensive end G.G. Robinson and less than two hours later added another big-time recruit - Pascagoula, Miss., three-star wide receiver Jaylen Smith.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Smith picked U of L over Arizona State, Nebraska, Cincinnati and a bunch of other offers he had on the table. He ended up with over 20 offers.

Smith made a visit to U of L on Junior Day in April and attends the same high school that produced current U of L defensive backs coach Terrell Buckley.

"I really liked talking to Coach Lamar (Thomas) and Coach Buck," Smith said after his visit. "They're really bright coaches and real nice guys and they really want the best for their players and it doesn't matter if we go to their school or another school, they just wants whats best for you and I really liked that about them."

As a junior, Smith totaled 724 yards on 33 receptions, averaging close to 22 yards a catch. He also had nine touchdown catches and is a dangerous weapon on special teams.

Smith is the 14th commitment for the U of L football team in the Class of 2015. He's the second from Mississippi, joining Olive Branch, Miss., safety T.J. Jallow.
