The 6-foot-3, 255-pound fifth-year senior is nearly back to full speed. He
can watch the tape of the hit he suffered last Oct. 8 at Memphis as many times
as you want to show it to him without wincing, and without thinking about the
horror going on in his head when it happened.

"We'd like to get it done quickly," he said at a news conference.
"There are matters of protocol that we have to handle and evaluations that
have to be handled, but we have to have this done no later than the winter of
2004."

At the conference's final football media day before powerhouses Miami and
Virginia Tech bolt, commissioner Mike Tranghese said the remaining 12 schools
need to decide soon whether they want to stay together or split into two
conferences -- one that plays football and one that doesn't.
``That's the first question that has to be answered,'' Tranghese said
Wednesday. ``We can't proceed until we have that answer.''

"You cannot have college football without representation from the
Northeast, one of the most populous areas in the country," explained
O’Brien during the Big East football media day at Giants Stadium. "That
would be wrong for college football. If they take Northeast football out of the
national football scene, then I think college football is in serious
trouble."
