Kickoff is only hours away. Stay tuned to ITV for the latest as soon as the game ends.

Cardinal Countdown

Cardinal running game We’ll start with the obvious…Louisville must establish a productive running attack early in the game. With two backs with so much potential in Lionel Gates and Eric Shelton, as well as rebuilt and now experienced offensive line, the Cardinals are poised to have their most potent rushing attack in years. With the addition of the fullback, Gates and Shelton will have an aggressive lead blocker in D.J. Kamer.

Exploiting Kentucky’s 3-4 defense
There’s no question that Kentucky Defensive Coordinator Mike Archer can develop linebackers and institute a 3-4 defense that will frighten most opponents, however this isn’t the Pittsburgh Steelers and Kentucky has little experience. Louisville needs to capitalize on the Wildcats defensive set with short yardage passing, taking full advantage of senior tight end Ronnie Ghent, as well as with screens to backs coming out of the backfield. While the 3-4 may not be a frequently seen defense in college, head coach Bobby Petrino does have experience against it from his days with the Jacksonville Jaguars and preparing for Archer’s Steelers.

Above average secondary play
I don’t expect the Cardinals youth-filled secondary to put together a performance that holds Kentucky quarterback Jared Lorenzen under 300 yards, but I do anticipate them putting together a ‘bend, but not break’ performance. A few key plays by the Cardinal secondary could greatly improve Louisville’s opportunity to win. Senior cornerback Josh Minkins must continue to be the leader he has proven to be during fall camp.

Pressure the quarterback
Consistent pressure by the defensive line and possible blitzes from the outside will force Lorenzen to throw the ball sooner than hoped, improving the chances for the U of L secondary to make a play. Defensive end Marcus Jones and linebacker Brandon Johnson are very quick off the ball and should create occasional havoc in the Kentucky backfield.

Balanced offensive attack
It is almost imperative that the Cardinals ground game is effective early so it will help first time starter Stefan LeFors at quarterback.

Joshua Tinch
With Joshua Tinch, J.R. Russell and Broderick Clark, Louisville has the advantage at the receiver position and LeFors must get them the ball and allow them to create yardage after the catch.

Protection
LeFors must have at least four to five seconds when dropping back to pass…yes, that’s all it’ll take! Protection from the offensive line, as well the running backs, tight ends and receivers are all equally important for the offense to run smoothly. Unlike last year, when the quarterback drops back to throw he’ll have multiple options, both up the field, as well as quick dumps.

Hold on to the ball
It could be raining during the game, which should benefit the Cardinals. The last four winners in this series has won the turnover battle. Enough said.

What I expect

  • I expect over 200 yards rushing by the Cardinals.
  • I expect around 250 yards passing by the Cardinals.
  • I expect Louisville’s defense to hold Kentucky’s running game to under 125 yards.
  • I expect to witness a perfectly designed game plan by Bobby Petrino.
  • I expect to see an aggressive Cardinal defense.
  • I expect that neither U of L’s Broderick Clark or UK’s Derek Abney will see much of the ball on kickoffs.
  • I expect a close game.
  • I expect the Cardinals to win their third straight in Lexington with a 27-23 victory over the Wildcats.
