6'6 TE Gary Barnidge commits to Louisville

Tight end Gary Barnidge followed through with what he had previously told ITV and committed to the Cardinals football program.

When ITV spoke with tight end Gary Barnidge on January 19th, he informed us that Louisville was "way out in front" of other programs and that he was close to committing.

This past Wednesday he did just that.

"Coach Paul Petrino came down on Wednesday and asked me what I was thinking of doing and I told him that I wanted to commit to Louisville," explained Barnidge.

One factor that played a role in his decision is that he has family in Kentucky.

"My mom's side has family in Glasgow and Danville," Barnidge said.

However, like many commitments to this 2004 class, Barnidge was also attracted to the current status and potential of the Louisville football program.

"It's already a great program, but it's also a program on the rise," explained the 6'6, 215-pound tight end. "They have signed a great quarterback and a receiver and have a great recruiting class, so I wanted to be apart of that."

With the graduation of Ronnie Ghent and Richard Owens, Louisville is in need of depth at the tight end position and Barnidge mentioned the possibility of early playing time also played a factor.

"They said that they'd like to redshirt me, but they may not be able to," Barnidge continued. "I'd like to play early as long as I can add some weight before getting there."

Barnidge, who is fully qualified, chose Louisville over offers from South Florida and LA-Lafayette, as well as interest from Oregon, Ole Miss and Florida.
