More than 40,000 fans attended the Cardinals 55-28 win over TCU on Wednesday night at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.
U of L's offense generated 587 yards, its sixth game this season surpassing the 500 yard mark. The Cards' 374 passing yards were a season high. U of L has passed for over 300 yards on five occasions this season and rushed for over 200 yards seven times.
Louisville
entered the game leading the nation in total offense and currently is averaging 528.1 yards a game.
Defensively, the Cardinals have held five of their eight opponents to 300 or fewer yards this season, including limiting four below 250 yards.
The Cardinals scored 24 first-quarter points, U of L's most points in a quarter since the Cards scored 24 in a 52-0 win over Grambling on Sept. 9, 1999. With 8:07 remaining in the first quarter, Louisville had scored 17 points and gained 141 yards in 16 plays while
TCU
had gained just seven yards in three offensive plays.
Senior quarterback
Stefan LeFors
threw two first quarter touchdown passes and a third in the third quarter to give him 31 for his career, which moves him into seventh place all-time in school history. LeFors also tossed three touchdown passes for the fourth time in his career and the third time this season. He became just the sixth quarterback in school history to throw for more than 5,000 yards in a career (career totals: 353-of-544 passes for 5,017 yards and 31 TDs).
Senior WR
J.R. Russell
(five catches, 107 yards) produced his 10th career 100-yard receiving game and his fourth of the season (three straight games, four of the last five). Russell moved up to third in career receiving yards at U of L (currently 2,310 receiving yards) and is fourth in career receptions (162 career catches). He extended his streak to 32 straight games with a reception, the fourth longest streak in school history.
The Cardinals scored 40 or more points for the ninth time in two seasons under head coach
Bobby Petrino
and the fifth time this season.
Junior wide receiver
Broderick Clark
, who entered the game with one career touchdown, recorded a pair of receiving scores.
Senior free safety
Kerry Rhodes
picked off his team-leading fourth interception in the fourth quarter.
Michael Bush
Senior running back
Lionel Gates
scored his 19th career rushing touchdown, which ties him with Leroy Collins for eighth place in school history.
Sophomore running back
Michael Bush
threw his third career touchdown pass in the game. He tossed two last year, throwing one against USF and another against Miami (Ohio) in the GMAC Bowl.
The Cardinals are 4-0 at home this season and 9-1 in two years under head coach Bobby Petrino.
The crowd of 40,107 marked the fourth crowd this season that has surpassed 40,000 in Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The game was about 700 tickets short of a sellout. U of L sold out its first three home games and has less than 100 tickets remaining for its final home game against
Cincinnati
on Nov. 27. U of L has had two of the top five crowds ever in Papa John's Cardinal Stadium this season: the season opener against
Kentucky
drew 42,681, the largest ever in Papa John's Cardinal Stadium and 42,032 vs. TCU, the fifth-largest.
The Cardinals defeated the Horned Frogs for the first time in school history. TCU had won the first three meetings in the series.
