Top UNC running back could return vs. U of L

North Carolina has struggled running the ball this season without top tailback Ronnie McGill, averaging less than 90 yards per game. However, Tar Heels' coach John Bunting is hopeful he'll have the talented junior ready to play when his team faces Louisville this weekend.

North Carolina running back Ronnie McGill might return to action this week against Louisville.

McGill, a junior who rushed for 419 yards and five touchdowns last season, has been sidelined this season with a torn chest muscle. He had surgery June 19 to repair the torn pectoral muscle sustained while lifting weights.

“From what I gather, Ronnie is going to be allowed to go full-go this week,” UNC coach John Bunting said. “If that is the case, I think there is a very good chance that he will be playing on Saturday versus Louisville.”

McGill ended spring practice listed as UNC’s No. 1 tailback. He averaged 5.3 yards per carry as a sophomore and led the Tar Heels in rushing with 654 yards as a true freshman. In his absence, UNC has struggled running the ball this season, averaging just 87 yards per game for a paltry 2.5 average per carry.
