U of L vs. UNC: Game Notes

Posted Oct 8, 2005

Game notes for No. 22 Louisville's 69-14 victory over North Carolina.

  • QB Brian Brohm completed 17-of-22 passes for 304 yards and four touchdowns, his third game this season with over 300 passing yards. He has thrown for over 250 yards in four straight games. Brohm entered the game ranked eighth in the nation in passing efficiency and 20th in total offense. All 10 of Brohm's touchdown passes this season have come at home.
  • DE Elvis Dumervil (pronounced DOO-mer-vill) produced his fifth game this season with multiple sacks. His 15 sacks this season are tied for second best at U of L with Dewayne White (2001) and his 27 career sacks are tied for fourth best at U of L with Mike Flores (1987-90). Dumervil also has forced seven fumbles this season, which is one behind the national record of eight set by both Dwight Freeney of Syracuse and Quintin Mikell of Boise State.

Dumervil also recorded his first career interception in the first quarter, a nine-yard return to the North Carolina eight yard line that set up the Cardinals' second touchdown.

  • RB Michael Bush, who entered the game tied for the nation's lead in scoring, added three touchdowns today (two rushing, one receiving). He ran for 57 yards on 20 carries.
  • The Cardinals' defense scored two defensive touchdowns today, put U of L in position for two field goals, forced four fumbles, intercepted one pass and had four sacks.
  • LB Malik Jackson made his first career start in place of the injured Abe Brown, who sprained his MCL in practice on Thursday.
  • RB George Stripling rushed for a career-high 74 yards on 13 carries.
  • U of L improved to 18-0 when scoring over 40 points under coach Bobby Petrino. The Cardinals have scored over 50 on 10 occasions in Petrino's three seasons at U of L. The Cardinals have produced over 40 points in 13 of the last 19 games.
  • U of L is 13-1 in Papa John's Cardinal Stadium and 11-2 in non-conference games (6-0 at home) under head coach Bobby Petrino. The Cards have won eight straight home games, the longest streak since the Cards won 10 in 1992-93. U of L has averaged 64.3 points in three home games this season.
  • With a reception in the first quarter, WR Joshua Tinch has caught a pass in 21 straight games.
  • TE Scott Kuhn caught his first career pass, a two yard TD reception in the third quarter.
  • DT Amobi Okoye returned to action after missing the Florida Atlantic game with a foot sprain.
  • LB Matt Sanders tore two ligaments in his right knee and is out for the season (anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament).
  • The sellout crowd of 41,334 was the eighth largest in Papa John's Cardinal Stadium history. U of L has sold out all three of its home games to date.
  • U of L wore all red uniforms for the first time this season and the first since the 2004 Liberty Bowl victory over Boise State.
