Dumervil Named AFCA All-American

Posted Dec 1, 2005

Louisville senior defensive end Elvis Dumervil, who is a finalist for a number of national awards and leads the nation in sacks, tackles for a loss and forced fumbles was named to the American Football Coaches Association All-American team

University of Louisville defensive lineman Elvis Dumervil headlines the 2005 AFCA Coaches' All-America Team announced today by the American Football Coaches Association.

The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all four of its divisions. What makes these teams so special is that they are the only ones chosen exclusively by the men who know the players the best - the coaches themselves.

Dumervil headlines the defensive line for this year's AFCA All-America Team. He is joined by Virginia Tech's Darryl Tapp, Boston College's Mathias Kiwanuka and Penn State's Tamba Hali.

The nation's leading sack leader, Dumervill is only the Cardinals' second AFCA All-American. Ibn Green was a first team selection in 1999. Dumervil is also the Cardinals' first first team All-American selection since Anthony Floyd was named first team by the Walter Camp Foundation in 2000.

Dumervil leads the nation with an average of two sacks per game. He holds three NCAA records this season, recording a record six sacks in a game versus Kentucky, sacks in consecutive games with nine and forced fumbles in a season with 10. He holds the BIG EAST record and the school record for sacks in a season and is four shy of tying the NCAA mark for sacks in a season.

A native of Miami, Fla., Dumervil is a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Award and the Lombardi Award.

The Cardinals close out the regular season on Saturday, December 3, at Connecticut.
