Zach Kiernan latest U of L commit

Scout.com three-star prospect Zach Kiernan of Newport Central Catholic became the third in-state verbal commitment for the Cardinals when he pledged late last week. NCC head coach Bob Schneider describes the 6'6, 240-pound lineman a 'top-notch' prospect.

There were plenty of early indicators of where Newport (Ky.) Central Catholic's Zach Kiernan would choose to continue to play football. The Scout.com three-star lineman made a few visits since last spring, with Louisville's junior day and the Cardinals season-opener against in-state rival Kentucky.

Despite scholarship offers from nearby Cincinnati and Kentucky, Kiernan chose to the school that was first to offer and will become a Louisville Cardinal.

"He's going to make a nice Division I player," said Newport Central Catholic head coach Bob Schneider. "I don't know if they are thinking of him as an offensive lineman or a defensive lineman, but he can play both."

Expected to get a first look as a defensive lineman at Louisville, a position change to the offensive front is also a possibility.

"In talking with the people that were recruiting him, I think they have him playing as an offensive lineman because of his quick feet," continued Schneider. "He has the speed and certainly the body to fill out to become a top-notch Division I player."

Kiernan, who compiled 96 tackles, 15 tackles for a loss, including four sacks, earned All-Conference, All-District, and All-State honors for his efforts as a junior.

Equally impressive is his work in the classroom, where he ranks as one of the top students in his graduating class.

"He's an excellent student and does very well in school," Schneider said. "He's an all-around real good kid."

Kiernan, joins Louisville Male's Doug Beaumont and Rockcastle County's Brad Durham, as U of L in-state commitments.

"I believe it's good for football in the state of Kentucky, when the top-notch players stay in-state," said Scheider. "It helps us all the way down the line and on the high school level."

Originally scheduled for an official visit with Louisville this weekend, Kiernan will now visit for either the Cardinals home game against West Virginia on November 2 or for the final home contest of the year against Connecticut on December 2.
