Michael Bush will enter the National Football League Draft instead of returning to Louisville next season, the star running back announced Tuesday morning at a press conference on the U of L campus.

"I love my time here at U of L, but I think it is time for me to move on," Bush said.

Bush's announcement comes just hours before Tulsa's Steve Kragthorpe is set to be named the new Louisville coach, replacing Bobby Petrino, who left Sunday to take the head coach job with the Atlanta Falcons.

Bush admitted that had Petrino stayed at Louisville, it would have made his decision much more difficult to make. "Yes it would have been a whole lot tougher," Bush said.

Bush said he's spoken with several NFL GM's and the feedback he received is that he could go anywhere from the first to the third round. "That's a chance I have to take," he said.

Bush missed nearly all of the 2006, suffering a season-ending leg injury in the first game at Kentucky after rushing for 128 yards and three touchdowns in the first half against the Wildcats.

One of the highest-rated players in high school to attend Louisville, Bush will go down as one of the finest players in U of L football history. He has helped elevate the Louisville program to new heights and played a big part for U of L in 2004 when the Cardinals finished #6 in the nation after an 11-1 season that included a Conference USA and Liberty Bowl titles.

During his three plus seasons, Bush has rushed for more than 2,300 yards and 39 touchdowns, averaging 5.7 yards per carry. His 39 career touchdowns rank second in school history behind Lenny Lyles.

In 2005, Bush earned first team All-Big East honors after setting the school record for rushing touchdowns with 23 and points scored with 144. As a junior, Bush led the nation in scoring and finished first in the Big East conference in rushing and all-purpose yardage.
