After building early 5-0 and 10-4 leads, the University of Louisville baseball team fell to Rice in the opener of the 2007 College World Series on Friday afternoon.

Donned in white pants, white spikes, black jersey’s and black caps, a uniform combination that has delivered nothing but wins this season, the University of Louisville Cardinals baseball team didn’t have the look of a program making it’s first ever trip to the College World Series.

Facing Rice, a number two national seed, in the first game of the championship, Louisville continued it’s impressive post-season play. The Cardinals took advantage of struggling Rice starter Ryan Berry early in the game, jumping on top of the Owls 5-0 through three innings.

Leading 2-0 and with Isaiah Howes and Jorge Castillo on the base paths, Chris Dominguez connected for his sixth home run of NCAA post-season play to give the Cardinals the early lead.

The Owls first threat of the game came in the bottom of the third inning, when they hit six singles, including four straight with two outs, plating four runs.

The Cardinals struck again in the fourth when Logan Johnson belted his 14th home run of the season giving U of L a 6-4 advantage.

An inning later, following a Derrick Alfonso single and a double by Chris Cates, Boomer Whiting connected for a single, driving in both and upping Louisville’s lead to 8-4. Following a pitching change - the third for Rice through five innings - Logan Johnson hit his second home run of the game, driving in two and increasing Louisville’s lead to 10-4.

In the home half of the fifth inning, Rice, who is making it’s sixth College World Series appearance in ten years, responded with three runs, all coming with two outs and following an error by shortstop Chris Cates.

A pair of solo shots in the sixth and seventh innings by Joe Savery, who was the original scheduled starting pitcher, and Aaron Luna respectively, trimmed Louisville’s once sizeable lead to 10-9.

Despite facing Cardinals closer Trystan Magnuson, the Owls steady comeback continued. Four hits plated three runs and gave Rice it's first lead of the game.

After pounding out 14 hits through five innings, Cardinal hitters managed just one hit - a double by Jorge Castillo - after building their six run lead.

The Cardinals will next face the loser of the North Carolina - Mississippi State game at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, with ESPN providing national television coverage.

NOTES:

  • The Cardinals dropped to 0-5 on the season when allowing 10 runs or more.
  • It's just the second time in 18 games that U of L failed to win when scoring 10 or more runs.
  • 8 of Rice's 15 runs were scored with two outs.
  • Freshman All-American Justin Marks is the expected game two starter.
  • With two runs scored against Rice, Boomer Whiting upped his school record career total to 196.
