Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe announced Monday afternoon that Michael Adams is out for the season and JaJuan Spillman has been suspended from the team.

Adams, a sophomore defensive end, hasn't played at all this season. Not only is the 6-3, 261-pound Adams out for the remainder of this year, but Kragthorpe said his career is likely over because of head injuries.

"Michael Adams will not be able to participate this season and right now it looks like his football career will be over because of a concussion issue," Kragthorpe said.

Kragthorpe also announced that Spillman, the Cardinals sophomore kick returner, is out indefinitely. Spillman played the first quarter against NC State Saturday, but did not return to the game after that. Kragthorpe said that Trent Guy and Doug Beaumont will step in during Spillman's absence.

"JaJuan Spillman is indefinitely suspended from the football team," Kragthorpe said, though he declined to give a reason for Spillman's suspension.

"He didn't play on offense the last three quarters the other day," Kragthorpe added. "It reconfigures some things in terms of some guys stepping up and playing a little bit more. Trent did a great job for us in the game. I think he really stepped up and made some big plays for us. And Doug Beaumont may get to play some more for us on offense."

Kragthorpe didn't indicate when, or if, Spillman would return to the team.

"I look at every one of these guys like they are my son," he said. "(But) you have to have discipline and you have to be stern in the way that you approach things. You have to look at the situation from an objective standpoint. The easy decision would be to just let a guy go right away. The hard decision comes when you have to continually look at things and continually help a young man and you basically come to the end of the rope where you say we can't do this anymore."

On the injury front, Kragthorpe said he expects Harry Douglas, Peanut Whitehead and Adrian Grady to play Friday night against Utah. Douglas and Whitehead did not play against NC State (Doug sat out with an ankle injury; Whitehead with family issues), while Grady was dinged up against the Pack.

"(Peanut) should be back against Utah and he will practice today," Kragthorpe said.
