Louisville in good shape with TN star McHaney

Thad McHaney

Thad McHaney is a talented and versatile prospect. The Brentwood (TN) star is rated one of the nation's top TE prospects and also excels as a defensive end. Louisville recently offered the 6-foot-6, 240-pound Haney and the Cards are making a strong push for the Scout.com three-star prospect.

"I think (highly) of Louisville's offer," Thad McHaney said. "They've got some real good people in their program and I'm excited about coming down for an official visit with my parents."

Haney picked up an offer from the Cardinals two weeks ago and has developed a solid relationship with his lead recruiter – special teams coach Mark Nelson. "We talk about everything – life in general," Haney said. "He's just told me how he wants to help me become a man. Stuff like that. He's a really good guy and we also talk about football and where they see me playing."

Though he's rated one of the nation's Top 50 tight end prospects, the Cardinals believe his future lies on the defensive side of the ball. "They're recruiting me as a defensive end/outside linebacker," McHaney said.

As a junior, McHaney recorded 40 tackles and 12 sacks. On offense, he caught six passes and one touchdown.

And while he didn't attend college camps over the summer, McHaney did make a few unofficial visits. "I visited Ole Miss, Louisville and Kentucky," McHaney said.

What did he think about Louisville? "They have great facilities," said McHaney. "The stadium is real nice. It's real nice. I took a tour of the campus and the weight-room. And it's a good mix of city and the country is 10 minutes down the road. It was a very good trip."

While in Louisville, McHaney had an opportunity to meet quite a few of the UofL coaches. "I got to talk to coach (Ron) English, the d-line coach (Ken) Delgado and I talked with coach Kragthorpe," McHaney said. "Coach English and coach Kragthorpe love what they do. They're teachers and they emphasize teaching and building young men."

With 11 total scholarship offers, McHaney has no shortage of school options. He said he'll start to narrow things down next month in anticipation of making his decision. Tennessee, South Carolina, Oklahoma and Vanderbilt are also in the mix for McHaney.

"After I take the ACT next month I'm going to narrow things down," said Haney. "I'm pretty sure I'll decide sometime after September. The people I'm going to stay with for the next four or five years will be a factor. My parents will also play some part in my decision. I want to see how the team prepares for games and the lifestyle on campus. I will probably stay within a three or four hour drive from home but I wouldn't rule out going farther away."

Besides an official visit to Louisville, Haney said he also plans to take an official visit to Ole Miss. "Then the rest I've got to decide who I'm going to visit," he said. "Ole Miss is really similar to Louisville. They have great people in their program. I've got a pretty good relationship with their offensive coordinator."
