JUCO playmaker checking out Louisville

Josh Bellamy, a former big-play wide receiver at Butte (CA) College, is looking for a college. Bellamy committed to USF twice and signed with Iowa State last year, but didn't enroll at either school because of academics and coaching changes. This weekend, he'll visit Louisville.

Josh Bellamy knows a thing or two about recruiting.

The 6'1, 200-pound wide receiver originally signed with South Florida in 2007 out of Gulf Port, Florida. Forced to go the junior college route due to academics, Bellamy signed with Iowa State last year but didn't enroll because he fell one course short academically.

This year, Bellamy returned to Florida to finish up his associate degree and intended to play for USF next season. That fell through when Jim Leavitt was unexpectedly dismissed. Now, Bellamy is considering Louisville and plans to visit the Cardinals his weekend.

"I know Coach Strong from Florida and he's recruiting me now," Bellamy said. "Plus, my cousin Preston Pace is there. So I set up a visit and I'm going there this weekend."

Bellamy spoke with Strong recently about the possibility of playing for the Cardinals next season.

"He was cool, he's funny," Bellamy said. "He knows what he wants. He wants to win. That's what I want to do."

Bellamy was a star wide receiver at Butte (CA) College from 2007-08, totaling 80 catches for 1,307 yards and 17 touchdowns, a Butte record. He was a teammate of current Louisville players Preston Pace, Bobby Burns and Anthony Conner.

"He said he needed playmakers," Bellamy said. "They lost two receivers last year Trent Guy and Scott Long. So he's going to need some more receivers. But he was talking about me as a running back too."

Bellamy hasn't made any recruiting visits this winter and doesn't have any planned other than his visit to Louisville. He says USF is still trying to get him on campus for a visit.

"They've been calling me to come over and meet the new coach," said Bellamy. "So I'll probably go over and meet the new coach. I've talked to the receiver coach. He was there with Jim Leavitt and stayed on the staff with Coach [Skip] Holtz."

The Cardinals have limited scholarships remaining for next year and Bellamy claims an offer from UofL.

"I'm going to go see what Louisville's like, I'm not just going to commit based on talk," Bellamy said. "I want to see what South Florida is talking about, then I'll talk to my mom and see what she thinks."
