| Finished spring drills as the starter at tailback, but tore his left pectoral (chest) muscle lifting weights in June and was expected to miss four to five months.
2004 - Sophomore Season
Finished third on the team with 419 rushing yards on 79 carries and scored five touchdowns • Caught two passes for 19 yards and a score • Played in just seven games due to a nagging ankle injury that caused him to miss the Louisville, Florida State, NC State, Miami and Virginia Tech games • Played well against Boston College in the Continental Tire Bowl, rushing for 53 yards on eight carries and catching a 12-yard touchdown pass •Had his best game since the season opener with 95 yards and one touchdown in the 40-17 win at Duke • Scored his first touchdown since the Georgia Tech game when he burst through the Blue Devil defense from five yards out •Saw his first significant action since the Utah game in Carolina's 31-24 victory over Wake Forest • Had eight carries for 33 yards, including a long of 16 yards, against the Deacons • Had just four carries for 10 yards against Utah before aggravating his left ankle and did not return •Sprained his ankle in the third quarter against Georgia Tech • Carried 10 times for 38 yards and scored a touchdown against the Yellow Jackets before the injury •Rushed for 57 yards on 18 carries at Virginia, including a long of 28 yards • Battling a sore hip, he rushed for 133 yards on 13 carries (10.2 avg.) and scored three touchdowns in UNC's 49-38 win over William & Mary • Twice McGill was forced to go to the training room with a hip pointer, but each time he was able to re-enter the game • In the fourth quarter, he tied a school record with three touchdowns in one quarter • He scored from four yards out to put the Tar Heels ahead 35-31 on Carolina's first possession of the fourth quarter • On UNC's next drive, McGill accounted for all 65 yards with runs of 6, 49 and 10 yards • He added his final score on the next drive from seven yards.
2003 - Freshman Season
Enrolled at Carolina in January and practiced with the Tar Heels that spring • Played in all 12 games and started eight, including the last seven of the season • Led the team in rushing with 654 yards on 128 carries and scored seven touchdowns • Averaged 5.1 yards per carry • Ranked seventh in the ACC with 54.5 yards rushing per game • Also played on special teams and forced a key fumble on a punt return against Wake Forest • Rushed for 244 yards on 29 carries and scored three touchdowns in the win over Wake Forest • That is the third-highest single-game rushing total for a UNC freshman and the ninth-highest total in school history • Earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors following the Wake game • Rushed for 95 yards on 19 carries at Georgia Tech and had two catches for 24 yards • Made his first career start against Syracuse after rushing for 48 yards against Florida State in the season opener • Rushed for three touchdowns against Wake Forest, two touchdowns against Arizona State, one vs. ECU, one at Clemson • His seven rushing touchdowns are the most at UNC since Jonathan Linton had 10 in 1997 • Led the team with 67 yards in the win at East Carolina • Of his 67 yards, 44 came on the Tar Heels' final scoring drive, including a 1-yard touchdown run • It was the first touchdown of his career • Led the team with 63 yards rushing at Maryland • Had seven catches for 54 yards.
