U of L's Stockman 'smart and knows the game'
Matz Stockman has made his debut in the United States. The 7-foot-2 University of Louisville signee from Norway played three games – including one in front of Rick Pitino – during the past few days with his Canarias Basketball Academy team from the Canary Islands. Stockman had four points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots in the first game, a loss to Monroe College. He had 14 points on 6 of 6 shooting with two rebounds and two blocks against Massanutten, Va., Military Academy. He played limited minutes in a third game on Sunday. While calling him a "project," Pitino was excited about Stockman. "He's a legit 7-2 with a legit 7-6 wing span, runs very well and has outstanding hands," Pitino said. "He knows how to pass and knows how to play. ." . . He has to learn how to play the game the American way. But it will come fast because he's very smart and knows how to play the game. Scout.com national analyst Evan Daniels watched Stockman in two games this weekend and said he would be rated likely as a three-star prospect. Daniels was impressed with his offensive skills. "He has a good set of hands and good touch," Daniels said. "He was really confident going to finish with his left hand. "I think he has a lot of upside. He's not the guy that will come in and be a major contributor as a freshman. But he's a guy who they will work with and get in the weight room and down the road he will be a good player. Stockman is not the only player on the CBA team being recruited by U of L. His 6-foot-11 Slovakian teammate – Michal Cekovsky – has also been offered by U of L and Daniels said he "seems to be the best prospect" on the team. Cekovsky also has an offer from Arizona would be a four-star prospect. Cardinal Authority will have more on Cekovsky soon.
